A Legacy of Nature & Adventure: Camp Fort Hill Receives Grant Support for Renovation Project
For nearly 100 years, Camp Fort Hill has been where stories begin—a place where kids connect with nature, create friendships, and grow through shared experiences. Tucked away on North Everson Drive just outside of Sturgis, the camp has long served as a backdrop for outdoor education, youth retreats, and community gatherings in St. Joseph County.
Now, thanks to support from several funds at the Sturgis Area Community Foundation, Camp Fort Hill is undergoing a much-needed renovation to ensure its legacy lives on for the next hundred years.
“This grant allows us to make necessary improvements that will preserve the camp for future generations while continuing to provide meaningful experiences for young people in our community,” said Mary Franks, Board President.
The renovations will strengthen Camp Fort Hill’s role as a safe and welcoming community asset, supporting everything from environmental education to family reunions. Planned improvements include updates to several of the camp’s most iconic structures, including the Lodge, both Bunkhouses, and the Nature Center.

Grant Support Rooted in Legacy, Youth and Adventure
This revitalization effort is made possible by three meaningful grant funds at the Sturgis Area Community Foundation:
The Newell A. & Grace A. Franks Fund, advised by the Franks family of Sturgis, reflects a deep commitment to local connection and growth. With strong family ties to the region, their investment in Camp Fort Hill honors a place that has shaped countless lives.
The Youth Advisory Council (YAC) Fund, led by local high school students, provided early funding for the project. Their support highlights the powerful role young people play in shaping their community. Their vision ensures Camp Fort Hill continues to be a place where kids explore, imagine, and lead.
The Daniel E. Martin Fund, established in memory of Dan Martin, reflects Dan’s love of the outdoors and recreation. Dan embraced life with joy and was always ready for new experiences. Supporting a place where kids are encouraged to take risks, try something new, and embrace the outdoors beautifully honors his adventurous spirit.

A Camp for the Next Century
Camp Fort Hill has always been a place “where memories are made.” Thanks to the generosity of the Franks Fund, the YAC Fund, and the Daniel E. Martin Fund, it’s ready to keep making those memories for the next hundred years and beyond.
“Camp Fort Hill has touched so many lives, and I feel deeply honored to help carry its legacy forward. We’re working to preserve its natural beauty while creating new ways for youth and the community to connect, learn, and fall in love with this magical place for the first time, or all over again.” said Meggie Thompson, Camp Director.
Camp Fort Hill is one of those rare places that connects people across time. Grandparents who once explored its trails, now return to watch their grandchildren do the same. But to keep that magic alive, it must be nurtured. Preserving Camp Fort Hill means ensuring future generations have the same opportunities to grow, discover, and build lasting memories in the great outdoors.
