Since 2004, the Robert and Barbara Hackman Memorial Scholarship fund has helped local graduates pursue a post-secondary education. This year, the fund awarded $12,000 in educational scholarships to six Sturgis High School seniors.

About the Award

Robert R. “Bob” Hackman was born April 3, 1931 in White Pigeon, Michigan, the eldest of five siblings. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army earning the rank of sergeant. Bob graduated from White Pigeon High School, Ferris State College in Big Rapids, Michigan and the Indiana School of Mortuary Science.

Bob was a licensed funeral director and joined the staff at the Foglesong Funeral Home in Sturgis in 1957, where he later assumed ownership in 1972.

Bob was very active in the Sturgis community serving on many committees and boards. He always had a sincere interest in the education of the young people of Sturgis. At his untimely death he was serving his second term as a member of the Sturgis Public Schools Board of Education holding the position of vice president.

With an SACF scholarship fund, the Hackman family was able to continue Bob’s interest in educating the young people of Sturgis. In January of 2010 Bob’s wife Barb passed away and the family re-named the Fund to include her name as well. Barb was also active in the Sturgis community and in supporting education for area youth.

About the Scholars

Morgan Miller
Morgan plans to attend Cornerstone University this fall to study Pre-Med. Throughout high school, she has remained active in school sports and clubs including varsity softball, athletic training, National Honors Society and Leo Club.

Brendan Bundy
Brendan will attend the University of Northwestern Ohio this fall where he plans to study Skilled Trades Engineering. While at SHS, Brendan has participated on his school’s baseball, basketball, and tennis teams, and in the Key Club.

Jacie King
Jacie plans to move West this fall to the University of Arizona where she will study Science. Throughout her four years at SHS, Jacie has remained active with her school’s swim team, National Honors Society, and church youth group. She has earned numerous awards and is a para-triathlon competitor.

Meah Yunker
Meah will attend Grand Valley State University to study Journalism. While at SHS, she has participated in multiple activities including cross country, track and field, Student Senate, Peer Assistance, National Honors Society, Leo Club, and Social Justice Club.

Rylee Wanamaker
Rylee plans to attend Ferris State University to study social work. She is a member of her school’s varsity soccer team, and has participated in track and field, basketball, and volleyball. Rylee is also a member of the Key Club.

Shelby Bennett
Shelbly plans to attend a four-year university this fall to study Pre-Med. While in high school. she has participated in softball, Student Senate, Key Club, church youth group, and National Honors Society.
