Spring YAC Grant Recipients Announced!

The Sturgis and Constantine Youth Advisory Councils (YAC) continue to demonstrate their commitment to empowering young people and addressing community needs. During the spring grant cycle, the two councils awarded a total of $7,065 to fund youth-focused initiatives in St. Joseph County. This process not only supports valuable projects but also equips YAC members with leadership skills, critical thinking, and a sense of responsibility.

Sturgis Area Chamber of Commerce

2025 Sturgis Fest Hispanic Heritage Celebration

With grant support from Sturgis YAC, the Sturgis Area Chamber of Commerce plans to continue its Hispanic Heritage Celebration during Sturgis Fest on June 27, 2025. The celebration provides free entertainment, including live mariachi and Mexican Indie Rock bands, a DJ, dancers, decorations, and advertising. This family-friendly event highlights Hispanic culture, attracting hundreds of attendees and ensuring accessibility regardless of economic background. It engages youth through music, dance, car shows, interactive competitions, and cultural activities, offering the Hispanic community an opportunity to celebrate their heritage!

Sturgis High School

Senior CPR Class

40 senior students at Sturgis High School are set to receiving training in lifesaving skills. This initiative aims to empower students with critical emergency response skills, increasing community safety and students’ career readiness. The training course will be conducted by a local firefighter, equipping students with the knowledge and confidence to assist others in emergencies.

Constantine YAC Recipients

Riverside Elementary

Square Dancing Hoe-Down

Fourth graders at Riverside Elementary are set to learn the basics of square dancing in their music class, culminating in a live square-dancing event with a professional caller and dancers from Grand Rapids. This project promotes teamwork, rhythmic movement, appreciation of American heritage, and introduces a lifelong recreational skill. The music class hopes to make this an annual event to benefit future students!

Constantine High School

Field Trip Experiences

Students at Constantine High School will be visiting Binder Park Zoo explore potential career opportunities and gain hands-on insights into animal care and related responsibilities. Before the visit, each student will research a chosen animal, preparing questions to deepen their understanding during the trip. Students will learn about animal habitats, dietary needs, sleep patterns, and the costs associated with animal care, enriching their knowledge and reinforcing their interest in careers involving animals.
